A report detailing "serious concerns about widespread dysfunction and maladministration" within Sydney's Liverpool City Council has sparked a state inquiry into the council and its members.NSW Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig has said he intends to suspend the council and could after receiving the interim report, which details allegations about a number of areas within the council.It reveals an interim investigation found several council positions, including the CEO and Directors, were filled by people with little to no experience, and also found they were given remuneration packages up to $250,000 that had no evidence of being market-tested or merit-based.

NSW Government to launch public inquiry into Liverpool City Council

The NSW Government has today ordered a public inquiry into Liverpool City Council after an interim report provided to the Minister for Local Government detailed serious concerns about widespread dysfunction and maladministration.

The Minister has also written to the Mayor of Liverpool advising of his intention to suspend the Council and postpone the elections due in September while the inquiry is being conducted. The Council has been given seven days to respond.

The interim report provided to the Minister forms part of an investigation announced in April 2024 under Section 430 of the Local Government Act 1993.The scope of the Section 430 investigation focused on recruitment matters including whether the Council had complied with its statutory obligations, if conflicts of interest influenced staff appointments and any other matters that may have impacted the governance and effective administration of the Council.

NSW government gives Liverpool City Council one week to prove why it shouldn't be suspended and local elections postponed

Liverpool Council has been given a week to prove why it should not be suspended after an investigation found "widespread and serious concerns about dysfunction" within the council.

Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig has also announced a public inquiry would be held into the council following allegations of maladministration.

An investigation into the council's recruitment and procurement processes began in April, but an interim report handed down today has identified additional "areas of concern".

In a statement, Mr Hoenig said there was "a strong likelihood that there are additional issues affecting the operations of the council that have not yet been identified".
